FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Wait... What is a poetry slam?

The poetry slam was invented to bring poetry out of academia and into the public sphere. It was popularized through the art and efforts of Patricia Smith (f*ck yeah!), who is credited with co-founding the Boston Poetry Slam. Random audience members are asked to judge and poets are given three minutes on stage to make their impression.

Do I belong here?

Everyone has a place here. FEMS upholds the feminine in all people, but not everyone belongs on our stage. If you don't identify with feminine experiences, you can still donate, volunteer, and attend our events.

Am I feminine?

Feminine people come in all genders (or lack thereof), sexes, and identities. Ultimately, a femme, in many ways, may not benefit from the existence of patriarchy and the unfortunate masculine dominance/favoritism that exists in our society (and slam poetry). There is not one answer to this question, and every femme will tell you something different.

When you say all ages what do you mean?

We mean that we are actively recruiting people from all ends of the life spectrum, going into youth spaces and poetry groups for elders and everywhere in between.

Can I compete in the annual tournament?

All you need in order to compete is a team of four poets with original work who identify with the feminine experience. This tournament is open to writers of all ages and of all writing experiences. We want to uphold and empower femmes who are new to slam and give experienced competitors a new kind of tournament.

Why feminine and not woman?

Not everyone who lives a feminine experience is a woman, and not every woman is feminine.
